WHAT'S NEW
- I have moved my office! New address is 1023 Kentucky Street, Lawrence, KS 66044. It has on-site parking (in the alley between Kentucky and Tennessee) and is fully accessible.
- I am a participating provider for Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. I bill fees for other insurance coverage, with the client being responsible for the difference between the insurance payment and my full fee.
- I started offering workshops on empowerment and communication, the 3rd Saturday of every month, starting April 23rd--if at least 5 people sign up. The workshops will be held in a meeting room at the Lawrence Public Library, on a free-will fee basis. Free-will fee means you decide what you can afford to pay to attend. Email me at barbara@barbarajgilbertphd.com for more information about topics, to be sure a workshop date is on, or to reserve a spot.
Welcome Message
I would like to welcome you to my web site by telling you a little about my history as a licensed psychologist and my specialty areas.
I saw my very first psychotherapy client over 25 years ago and knew early on that I had chosen a wonderful career. Helping people understand the deeper causes of their relationship difficulties and then resolve them, push towards greater growth and effectiveness in their lives, navigate extremely difficult life events and come out stronger on the other side--this work feels like a tremendous privilege and I find it very rewarding. Each person is unique and we need to work out a unique plan for addressing difficulties. At the same time, after many years of doing this work, I likely have experience that will help us get to resolution and more effectiveness in your life more quickly and smoothly.
I have also spent a significant amount of time in my career training others to be good psychotherapists. In addition to one-on-one clinical supervision of psychologists-in-training, I have also designed and administered training for doctoral level psychologists for many years. I am passionate and committed to this very important work--work that keeps the profession strong and keeps me learning too.
I work with a wide range of concerns. Depression and anxiety are the most common concerns in any psychologist's practice and I have a great deal of experience helping people with these difficulties. One of my specializations is in trauma recovery work--whether a one-time trauma like a bad car accident or an ongoing trauma like abuse in the family. I started this specialization while in graduate school and have been working with complex trauma recovery for almost as long as I have been a therapist, and enjoy training other psychologists in this work. I also specialize in helping people resolve what I call "power dysfunctions" which has to do with people who are either underassertive or overly aggressive or generally just feeling ineffective in life. Many people also appreciate help with concerns arising from new challenging stages or circumstances in life and this is work I enjoy too. I care a lot about how people from different backgrounds are impacted by bias or social privilege and when the client wishes, empowerment work for effective living in a biased society is another area in which I have a lot of experience and can provide help.
My office is located at 1023 Kentucky St. in Lawrence KS. Please contact me to discuss any questions or to set up an appointment. My phone number is (785) 760-3952. I look forward to talking with you.
